Thai FM: Staff at Thai embassy in Japan to stay put

BANGKOK, March 17 (TNA) - Speaking on Thursday, Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya confirmed that authorities concerned are ready to evacuate Thai people by air and by sea from Japan, but insisting that staff members at the Thai Embassy in Japan remain at their workstation, as there has not been any order for their evacuation.

Kasit said that he is closely monitoring the situation in Japan, especially with regard to a damaged nuclear power plant, and that staff at the Thai embassy in Tokyo have received regular updates from relevant authorities of Japan and Thailand and will follow the Japanese government's advice in accordance with international norms.

Regarding a possible evacuation of Thai people from areas at risk in Japan, the Thai foreign minister noted that the Thai embassy's officials and the Thai consulate general in Osaka have already prepared an evacuation plan, and that affected Thai nationals will be initially evacuated to Osaka by air and by sea from the Port of Kobe before leaving for South Korea, China or Taiwan.

According to the Thai foreign minister, the director-general of his ministry's Department of Consular Affairs has asked owners of cargo vessels to transport Thailand's donations to Japan and has been prepared to pick up Thai people if evacuation suddenly becomes necessary.

Kasit denied reports that air fares from Japan to Thailand were raised, affirming that his ministry has been ready to help all affected Thai people who want to return home, including paying air tickets for any of them who cannot afford a flight. The Thai foreign minister urged the needed Thai nationals to contact the Thai Embassy in Tokyo or the Consulate General in Osaka for the special assistance. (TNA)
