Thailand checking imported food from Japan

BANGKOK, March 17 (TNA) - Thai agencies concerned, including the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Office of Atoms for Peace, have begun checking imported food products from Japan for fears of radioactive contamination.
The Thai agencies have conducted tests on the imported consumer products, including vegetables, fruits, grains, meat, seaweed, seafood products and dairy products.
FDA Secretary-general Pipat Yingseri said although there has been no clear indication of radioactive contamination in Japanese products so far, Thailand needs to take precautions in the wake of radiation leaks from a Japanese nuclear power plant located in a disaster-hit area in Japan's northeastern region last Friday (Mar 11). Pipat acknowledged if any contamination was detected from the imported food, the item would be immediately destroyed and its importer would be fined.
Meanwhile, the Thai FDA chief has called a meeting with some 80 food importers to discuss strict inspections and controls on all food and other products imported from Japan. The local food importers have also been offered official guidelines on testing their food products for radioactive contamination. (TNA)
