Iran foreign policy highlights in 1389

TEHRAN, March 17 (MNA) - In a report published on Wednesday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast highlighted some of the most important foreign policy events during Iranian calendar year 1389, which will end on March 20.

Following is a brief summary of some of these events:

- Iran and the 5+1 group (the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China, and Germany) held talks on December 6 and 7 after a 14-month hiatus.

- Iran and the 5+1 group also held negotiations on January 20 and 21 in Istanbul.

- Several measures were taken to clear up the existing ambiguities about Iran’s nuclear program and to show the world that Iran’s nuclear policy is transparent.

- On January 15 and January 16, 2011, Iran invited a number of international representatives to visit its nuclear facilities.

Diplomats from Egypt, Cuba, Syria, Algeria, Venezuela, Oman, and the Arab League visited the Natanz enrichment facility and the Arak heavy water reactor in response to Iran’s invitation.

Some members of the UN Security Council and the European Union had also been invited but decided not to send representatives.

- On April 17 and 18, Tehran hosted a conference on nuclear disarmament which was entitled the Nuclear Energy for All, Nuclear Weapons for No One.

- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad attended the 2010 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) which was held from May 3 to 28.

In his address to the conference, Ahmadinejad said today certain nuclear armed countries are using their atomic arsenals as a tool to “bully” others and even find “dominance” over them.

- On May 17, Iran, Turkey, and Brazil issued a declaration, according to which Iran was to ship 1200 kilograms of its low-enriched uranium to Turkey to be exchanged for 120 kilograms of 20 percent enriched nuclear fuel to power the Tehran research reactor, which produces radioisotopes for cancer treatment. According to the agreement, the exchange was to take place in Turkey under the supervision of the IAEA and Iran.

- Tehran held a conference on Human Rights in the United States on October 25.

- Iran participated at the 11th Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Summit which was held in Istanbul on December 23.

- Iran also participated at the third summit of Caspian Sea littoral states in Baku on November 18, in which the presidents of the five Caspian Sea littoral states signed an agreement on security cooperation in the Caspian Sea region.

Ahmadinejad also proposed a six-point plan on additional cooperation among the five Caspian states.
- Iran, as a victim of terrorism, also participated at several conferences on terrorism.

- Iran played an active role at several conferences on the campaign against terrorism and held several negotiations with other countries’ officials in this regard.

- The Islamic Republic also had effective cooperation with regional countries, particularly the Persian Gulf littoral states.

- The Islamic Republic also took into consideration the crises in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Palestine, and made several suggestions in the regional and international forums to help settle the problems facing these countries.

In his report, Mehmanparast also pointed to the bilateral negotiations that Iran held with several regional countries, including Turkey, Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon, as well as Latin American countries of Brazil and Venezuela.

He added that the promotion of ties with certain African countries was also on Iran’s foreign policy agenda.

Mehmanparast added that Iran had good cooperation with the European Union in various areas.

He also expressed hope that Iran’s relations with other countries will improve during Iranian calendar year 1390.
