Learn lesson from Saddam’s fate: Ahmadinejad
TEHRAN, March 17(MNA) -- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has warned the countries that have sent troops to Bahrain about the consequences of their actions and said they should learn a lesson from Saddam Hussein’s fate.
Saudi Arabia and some other Persian Gulf states have sent troops to Bahrain at the request of the small kingdom to crack down on anti-government demonstrations.
Commenting on the U.S.-backed deployment of Saudi troops in Bahrain, Ahmadinejad said, “In the past, there were countries in the region that sent troops to a neighboring country (Iraq) and (they) should learn a lesson from Saddam’s fate.”
“The U.S. is not a loyal friend to you” (certain regional leaders) and it betrayed all its friends like Saddam, he told reporters following a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.
The United States and certain other countries provided Saddam with various weapons, but they themselves fought against Saddam in order to maintain their interests, he added.
He went on to say that the massacre of Bahrainis will be an indelible, ignominious mark on the record of the United States.
Ahmadinejad said, “Don’t you want to rule? If (you) pressure the majority of the people, who do you want to govern?”
Such brutal actions will have no result, he said, adding that the demands of the people should be addressed.
It is not possible to stop the people’s uprisings through military intervention by neighboring countries, he observed.
About 600,000 of the 700,000 Bahrainis have been protesting and they want change, and thus their demands should be met, he stated.
Iranian Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi also warned about Saudi Arabia’s military intervention in the internal affairs of Bahrain.
Such acts will only increase tension and undermine the stability and security of the region, Vahidi told reporters on Wednesday.
If this course of action is not halted, the region will turn into a center of conflagration, hostility, and conflict, he noted.
