MINISTER HAILS DEEP-SEA MINERAL WATER INDUSTRY

Denpasar, Aug 24 (ANTARA) - Maritime and Fishery Minister Freddy Numbery hailed an industry which would distill deep-sea water into mineral water.

"The production of mineral water by taking advantage of deep-sea water as raw material is an important breakthrough for our life," the minister said when dedicating the Omega Group Kyowa building here Saturday night.

Freddy said the distillation of deep-sea water by a Japanese company for mineral water with sophisticated technology was something new and would enrich knowledge on the importance of the sea for the people.

"Such a measure is greatly needed by Indonesia as the biggest archipelagic country in the world whose most of its territory is covered by sea with 4,000-kilometer costal areas," he said.

In addition, he said the production of mineral water with deep-sea water as raw material would indirectly help save the environment compared to mineral water production using water in huge volumes from mountains.

Taking water from mountains reduces the volume of water which is needed in daily life especially by floral species on the mountains, he said.

Making use of ground water by a water mineral company would also harm people living in a location where the company draws ground water as it would reduce the volume of water in their wells, he added.

The reducing volume of ground water would damage the land structure and cause intrusion of sea water into the land, particularly costal areas, he said.

Thus, he said, the use of deep-sea water as raw material for mineral water would overcome exploitation of ground water from mountains in the settlement areas.

"As to me, the Omega Group Kyowa's investment is a concrete measure in the friendship between Indonesia and Japan. In the current globalization era, such international solidarity is greatly needed," he said.

Peace in taking advantage of natural resources is a proof of the beauty of an intellectual work and a spiritual value which should be made into reality, he said.

"I hope such peace and solidarity can be the main capital for efforts to give welfare to human beings by considering the environmental conservation," he said.

He further said that the production of mineral water with deep-sea water as raw material would transfer technology to local scientists and professionals.

Meanwhile, the Omega Group Kyowa's Vice President Kimiya Homma said the mineral water from distilled deep-sea water would be produced and marketed as of October, 2008, with production capacity of 1,000 bottles per day.
