New Karachi hospital gets Gyn theater, blood bank
Karachi, March 16, 2011 (PPI): In a welcome move, aimed at providing better healthcare services to densely populated low income areas of Karachi, a modern gynecology theater and blood bank were inaugurated in the Sindh Government Hospital New Karachi, here on Wednesday.
Sindh Health Minister Dr Sagheer Ahmed speaking as chief guest at the inaugurating ceremony said this important hospital had no proper gynecology theater and blood bank; resultantly, poor people of the area were facing great hardships. He said with the opening of these two facilities, people living in densely populated New Karachi and surrounding localities would be greatly facilitated.
He said not only the Sindh Government Hospital New Karachi, but also other government-run hospitals in Sindh province were facing shortage of doctors and paramedics. He said the provincial health department was taking steps to meet this shortage.
Medical Superintendent of the hospital, Dr Hassan Alam said the gynecology theater and blood bank were set up with cost of Rs1.2mn and Rs0.3mn. He said the funds were mostly generated with the help of philanthropists. He said machinery and equipment to the blood bank were provided by Sindh Blood Transfusion Authority. He said his hospital was a pretty busy facility, adding last year 0.8mn patients visited the OPD of his hospital, 9330 patients were admitted and 1698 surgeries were conducted.
Incharge gynecology wad Dr Saeeda Kosar said her ward was activated just a few months back, but still it was conducted more than 2000 deliveries. She said 0.1mn women had visited OPD of the ward so far.
Incharge blood bank Naeemuddin Shaikh said her blood bank was also conducting more than 500 blood tests on daily basis. He said previously people of this area had to go to costly private labs and blood banks, but now they are getting these services at the government hospital on very nominal charges.
Sindh Health Secretary Hashim Raza Zaidi, EDO Health Karachi Dr nasir Javed, Dr Asif Zaman, Dr Suresh Kumar and others were also present.
