Unstable Afghanistan affects Tajikistan, whole region-CSTO Sec-Gen
16/3 Tass 163
DUSHANBE, March 16 (Itar-Tass) - Secretary-General of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) Nikolai Bordyuzha has expressed his concern over the situation in Afghanistan and its negative consequences for the neighboring countries at a session of the working group on Afghanistan on Wednesday.
"Instability in Afghanistan negatively affects the situation in the region, which already provoked last year's unrest in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan," Bordyuzha said.
According to the CSTO secretary-general, "In this connection it is
high time to evaluate and work out a set of measures to stabilize the
situation in Afghanistan" and undertake measures "to hold back outside
threats."
"The region's security level depends on this," he said.
Tajikistan's Security Council Secretary Amirkul Azimov said, "I
support the CSTO leadership's concern over the negative developments in neighboring Afghanistan."
He believes that "the current operation of the coalition forces gives no expected effects."
"Still worse, new militant groups are formed in Afghanistan, which
seriously threatens not only the region, but other countries," he said.
Taking part in the working's group session are deputy secretaries of the security councils of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia. Azimov heads the Tajik delegation.
