More doctors recruited for Japan-aid

BANGKOK, March 16 (TNA) - The Thai Medical Council (TMC) has announced that it is recruiting doctors online from around the country to assist recovery efforts in Japan, as relief operations in the country’s devastated northeast region enter their sixth day.

The Council’s chairman, Doctor Amnaj Kusalanon, launched the campaign Wednesday afternoon following his meeting with a Japanese Embassy official in Thailand. Discussing the matter of further support for victims of Friday’s earthquake and tsunami, he said that the plan will help provide a sufficient number of doctors, for any future assistance needed.

Doctor Amnaj said that the online recruitment portal, which is hosted through the Council’s website at [www.tmc.or.th], seeks volunteer doctors who are fluent in Japanese, and has encouraged 10 people to sign up.

Amnaj said his Council, together with Thailand’s Royal College of Physicians, was preparing to use the same website to disseminate information about the correct usage of Iodine tablets and Betadine, which are known to help resist radioactive contamination. To summarise, it will put forward that the substances are needless for those living as far as Thailand, while warning adverse results from possible Iodine poisoning.

Meanwhile, Group Captain Niwat Intarawichien, from the Thai Air Force’s Medical Services Division, said the Air Force will dispatch one of its C-130 planes to Japan on Thursday to bring home a group of Thais, after more than 200 people have voiced their requests. The plane will leave 10pm local time and arrive 9am the next day, with another flight scheduled to depart late at night on March 18. (TNA)
