Efforts underway for safeguard measures on Textile exports: Ambassador of Pakistan at Ankara

Karachi, March 15, 2011 (PPI): Following is the text of press release issued by Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI)

“Embassy of Pakistan at Ankara has approached the Turkish high-ups for exemptions to Pak Textile Exports in the proposed safeguard measures,” stated by H.E. Sardar Tariq Azizuddin, Ambassador of Pakistan at Ankara Turkey, in a meeting with Muhammad Saeed Shafiq, President, Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry and high power business delegation of KCCI at Pakistan Embassy Ankara. According to press release, the Ambassador cordially welcomed Muhammad Saeed Shafiq, President-KCCI and delegation members at the Embassy of Pakistan and appreciated their thoughtfulness to promote the national economy.
Ambassador informed that to provide level playing field, the Turkish government was under consideration to increase customs tariff for Pakistan and other regional countries, however, the Pak Embassy was taking measures for advocacy to acquire exemptions for Pakistan.
Ambassador informed that Pakistan’s Textile Export to Turkey were around 237 million USD and a decline was feared if proposed safeguard measures were imposed on Pak Exports of Textiles. He said that Pak Embassy has raised the said issue with Turkish Foreign Trade Minister who informed about the request/petition from domestic industry to impose proposed safeguard measures in order to provide safety and security because local industry was performing below par and there were layoffs of workers. He said that the rival countries of Pakistan were also propagating in this matter as they don’t like that Pakistan may excel in export. Ambassador focused that they were steadfast to convince Turkish Government to take exemptions for Pakistan’s Textile export.
Ambassador also informed that Chief Executive Trade Development Authority of Pakistan met the Turkish Foreign Trade Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Ali Baba Jan for exemptions but yet not receive any satisfactory response. He said that in October, 2009 in a Joint Economic Commission held in Pakistan, both governments decided that two-way trade of existing volume 782 Million USD will be enhanced to 2 Billion USD in future.
Ambassador informed that presently, due to chaos at Libya, the Embassy was engaged in coordination activities to receive Pakistanis working at Libya. He said that Embassy has planned to evacuate 6000 to 8000 Pakistanis working at Libya and to send them to Pakistan or a secure destination. He said that there were 18000 Pakistanis working at Libya mostly since last many decades and Pak Embassy at Ankara is making efforts to evacuate them for their safety.
Muhammad Saeed Shafiq, President-KCCI briefed the Ambassador that he was leading the KCCI delegation to Turkey in order to promote Pak economy and strengthen bilateral trade ties. He said that Pakistan’s economy was wounded facing manifold problems which were impeding the pace of industrial and commercial activities. He said that in that time of hardship, the business and industrial community was committed to uplift the economy.
He informed that it was learned that Turkish Government was under consideration to impose some additional duties on Textiles which will hamper the exports to Turkey and as outcome the foreign exchange will also decline, therefore, requested the Ambassador to interact with the Turkish Government in order to seek exemptions.
President-KCCI informed the Ambassador that KCCI never believed in AID but they always voiced for trade to promote national economy. He said that Pakistan was in dire need of market access to Turkey and European Union. He appreciated the team of Turkish doctors who visited Pakistan to provide medical treatment to the flood affectees and a large delegation of businessmen from Turkey arrived at Pakistan to offer their holy sacrifices on the occasion of Eid ul Azha and to provide qurbani meat to affectees.
Saeed Shafiq apprised that War against Terror had brought severe hardships to Pakistan’s economy and the international powers had not reciprocated in terms of market access. He stated that KCCI had planned to encourage youth for entrepreneurship and self-employment. He also underscored that negative perception of Pakistan must be improved in the eyes of European Union and other countries. President-KCCI also requested the Ambassador to recommend Turkish companies to participate in the KCCI’ My-Karachi Exhibition.
Members of KCCI delegation, Shamim Ahmed Firpo, Chaudhry Ansar Javed, Shaikh Muhammad Tehseen, Muhammad Arif, Masood Yahya and Khadim Rasool also participated in the meeting. At this juncture Moin ul Haq, Minister/ Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of Pakistan at Ankara, Abdul Akbar, Press Attaché, Embassy of Pakistan at Ankara, Nail Ersoy, Foreign Trade Expert, Republic of Turkey Prime Ministry, Under secretariat of Foreign Trade and Dogan Yucel, Director Projects, Pak-Turk Businessmen Association Karachi (PTBA) were also present.
