US imposes anti-dumping tariffs on Thai shrimps
BANGKOK, March 16 (TNA) - The United States has extended its anti-dumping tariffs on shrimps exported from Thailand and other nations, siding with fishermen on the Gulf of Mexico coast who fear a new economic blow.
The International Trade Commission, an autonomous US agency, voted 5:1 on Tuesday to keep duties on shrimps shipped from Thailand, China, India, Vietnam and Brazil, for "dumping," or selling the product in the US market at artificially low prices. Washington first imposed the duties in 2005 and the tariffs will now be in place until 2016.
In a statement, the US commission said it found that revoking the anti-dumping tariffs "would be likely to lead to continuation or recurrence of material injury within a reasonably foreseeable time."
According to US Agriculture Department figures, Thailand is by far the biggest exporter of shrimps to the United States, shipping nearly 200 million kilograms last year despite the punitive tariffs.
Lawmakers from the Gulf Coast had urged the US panel to extend the anti-dumping tariffs, saying that the US coastal area -- one of the poorest in the United States -- was suffering from Hurricane Katrina and last year's BP oil spill. (TNA)
