RME plane with humanitarian supplies leaves for Japan
MOSCOW, March 16 (Itar-Tass) - The Russian Ministry for Emergencies (RME) has sent out humanitarian aid supplies to Japan on Tuesday night for the population hit by a devastating earthquake and tsunami.
An official at the RME information department has told Itar-Tass, "RME plane IL-76 took off from Ramenskoye airfield outside Moscow at 23:50 Tuesday with a humanitarian aid cargo". The plane is carrying 8,600 blankets.
Earlier Irina Andrianova, head of the RME information department,
specified that on Tuesday the Japanese side had requested humanitarian aid from the Russian Federation (RF): 10,000 blankets and 10,000 mattresses.
"It is planned that RME planes' subsequent flights will also deliver
essential humanitarian goods to Japan," she said.
Meanwhile, Russian rescuers have got down to work in Japan.
Seventy-nine specialists from the RF are working in the area of the city of Sendai. Another two rescue parties are awaiting departure at
Khabarovsk airport: one from Moscow and the other one from the Far East.
The RME rescue group in Japan is numbering a total of about 180.
RME head Sergei Shoigu, during a meeting with Japan's Ambassador to the RF Masaharu Kono, said Russia is also ready to sent mobile hospitals and search-dog handlers to Japan. He recalled that the RF and Japan have a current Agreement on mutual assistance in an emergency. At the same time Shoigu requested the Japanese side to expedite fixing Russian rescuers' overflight to the disaster-hit zone for participation in search-and-rescue operations.
Masaharu Kono referred to Russia as a friendly country and thanked it for assistance in eliminating the aftermath of the earthquake. Very many countries offer their assistance to Japan. However, Russia was one of 13 countries immediately to offer assistance, for which Japan is highly grateful, the Ambassador pointed out.
