30 females appointed on contract basis in Sindh Women Development Department

Karachi, March 15, 2011 (PPI): Provincial minister for women development Ms. Tauqeer Fatima Bhutto informed Sindh assembly on Tuesday that 30 females were appointed in her department on contract basis during January 01, 2008 to April 30, 2010.

She stated this in a written reply to the question of MPA Aleem-ur-Rehman during question hour. To another question by same member, minister told the house that only two awareness seminars were held be her department from January to October last year - one on female age of marriage on May 06 at cabinet hall, Sindh secretariat and the other at Institute of Women Development Studies Jamshoro on harassment of women on June 09.

On a question by Moin Aamir Pirzada, the minister said her department runs only one Baby Day Care Centre in Sindh and that in Karachi where 30 children of various ages are looked after. A total of Rs.65000/- are spent on salaries of staff at the centre per month. The Day Care Centre deposited Rs.744, 400/- as revenue during April 01, 2008 to June 30, 2010.

Tauqeer Fatima, on a question by Ms. Heer Ismail Soho, informed that Women Complaint Cell Sukkur received only 32 complaints out of which relief to 20 women was provided and rest of cases were under process.

Replying to a question by Ms. Najma Saeed Chawla about the steps against sale/purchase of women and Jirga, the minister for women development Ms. Tauqeer Fatima Bhutto said her department under a project ‘Report on women trafficking in Sindh’ to prepare a report pertaining to various crimes against women including trafficking in Sindh. A consultant has also been tasked to complete the report which would be placed before the relevant forum for implementation. Moreover, to discourage the Jirga system, a project ‘Mediation of women in all divisional headquarters of Sindh through institutionalized alternative dispute resolution mechanism’ has been initiated to provide mediation facility to women facing legal proceedings in the courts or Jirga. The services of mediators would be hired under this project to provide support to women in need, she said.

To a question by Ms. Zareen Majeed, the minister said her department runs no vocational training centre for women however it is provided Baby Child Training under a scheme in all district headquarters of Sindh and 18 towns of Karachi. Training has been completed in 13 districts and 7 towns benefitting 499 girls/women.
