Thai foreign ministry delegation to leave for Japan to help Thais

BANGKOK, March 15 (TNA) - A delegation from the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs led by Chavanond Intarakomalsut, secretary to the foreign minister, will leave for disaster-stricken Japan to arrange for assistance for Thai people and hand foods and blankets to disaster victims in Japan.
Chavanond said that on Wednesday his delegation would leave for Japan on the TG 642 flight at 11.50pm. They will take care of Thai people and plan assistance for the compatriots. The delegation will also hand foods and blankets as some affected areas still have no electricity and are running out of foods. The delegation will deliver donations to Wat Pak Nam temple near Narita airport. The temple now functions as a help center for Thai people in Japan.
Regarding radiation leakage, Chavanond said that there had not been a report of any Thai people affected by the leakage and that the Japanese government already sealed off the vicinity in a 30-kilometer radius of the affected nuclear power plant.
He did not confirm the report that leaked radiation would reach Tokyo in a few hours. He only said that leaked radiation had not reached a dangerous level. However, for the safety sake, Chavanond said that Thai people would be evacuated as far as possible from hazardous areas. He assured that Thai authorities already prepared vehicles and money for the immediate evacuation of Thai people.
In the meantime, Chavanond is gathering the number of Thai people who want to return to Thailand. He said that more Thai people in Japan were expressing their intention to return to Thailand.
Asked how the Thai people would be examined for their possible radiation contamination, Chavanond said that he believed the Public Health Ministry would have preventative measures.
Initially, concerned authorities will look for the people who might come from areas close to radiation-contaminated sites, Chavanond said. (TNA)
