Cane toad fence to go around gorge
A gorge in Western Australia's Kimberley region will become the first tourist attraction in the state to be protected against poisonous cane toads by a fence.
The knee-high 2km barrier, made from cloth, will allow other animals to move into Emma Gorge, near Kununurra, while keeping out the toads.
Stop the Toad Foundation campaign manager Kim Hands said 200,000 cane toads had crossed the WA-Northern Territory border.
She said they had penetrated 70km into the Kimberley Tableland and were threatening native species by taking their food resources and poisoning those that feed on them.
Ms Hands said the fence would be erected at the end of April. It would take about three weeks to put up.
"Experience in the past has been that it has been really efficient," she said.
WA's first cane toad fence was erected at Point Spring Nature Reserve, north of Kununurra.
The latest project has been made possible with funding from the private sector as well as foundation volunteers who are paying for their own airfares to the Kimberley.
Staff at El Questro Wilderness Park will maintain the fence as part of their property management over the next three years.
