Thai government to provide assistance to Thai nationals in disaster-hit Japan

BANGKOK, March 15 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said Tuesday that his government is providing assistance to Thai nationals in disaster-hit Japan, with a delegation expected to arrive in areas battered by last week's earthquake and tsunami in Japan's northeast.

Abhisit said that the officials will collect survey data on the numbers of Thai people who have been affected by the historic calamity so that the Thai government's assistance efforts can reach all the affected Thai nationals.

The Thai premier said that agencies concerned are also coordinating to assist Thai people in Japan, including students and visitors, who want to return home and have contacted the Thai government's ad hoc centre for Thai nationals in Japan.

Regarding impacts on Thailand from the disaster, the Thai leader conceded that the incident should initially affect the Thai economy to some extent as the Japanese economy is a major overseas market for Thai business operators.

He added that the world number two economy will require a massive budget for rehabilitation programmes in its disaster-ravaged zones, including management plans to ensure public safety and normal operations of nuclear power plants in the damaged areas.

Meanwhile, Thailand's Parliament President and House Speaker, Chai Chidchob, told a House session on censure debate against the Thai Democrat Party-led government this morning that he has sent a letter to his Japanese counterpart conveying his sincere condolence to the Japanese Parliament and people, on behalf of all Thai parliamentarians.
