M4.6 point earthquake occurs near Kamchatka's southern coast
PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, March 15 (Itar-Tass) - An underground m4.6 point earthquake occurred in the Pacific Ocean off Kamchatka's southern coast. No tsunami warning has been issued.
A source at the Kamchatka branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences geological service told Itar-Tass that a tectonic tremor had been registered at 07:41 local time. The epicentre was located at a depth of 124.2 kilometers under the seabed approximately 280 kilometers to the south from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
Experts are not linking the Kamchatka earthquake to the recent series of devastating earthquakes in Japan. There are no signs that stronger shocks may hit southern Kamchatka, Viktor Chebrov, the head of the Kamchatka branch of the Russian geophysical service, told Itar-Tass.
He added that m7.0 point and m7.5 point earthquakes might occur off the eastern coast of southern Kamchatka in short-term and long-term perspectives of one and five years, respectively.
