US to set up council to strengthen higher education in India

Bangalore, Aug 21 (PTI) The United States would set up a higher education council shortly with the involvement of experts from Indian and American universities and the private sector to assist India in capacity building and training in the field, a senior US official has said.

"We are going to establish a higher education council where we are going to have a group of Indian and American University people, experts and people from private sector," Goli Ameri, Assistant Secretary of State in the US Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs said.

Ameri, who interacted with heads of various companies here during her visit, told PTI in an interview Wednesday that the American higher education sector was keen to assist India and the proposed council would give a push to possible initiatives in the area.

"We are hopeful to be able to present (the proposal) to CEOs forum that's going to meet in New York in mid-October, and hopefully, be able to have the support of the private sector who are, as you well know, very interested in higher education sector in India", she said.

Ameri Praised India's "solid" education system, but said more needs to be done, particularly in the higher education space, with the support of the private sector.

"India is for sure known for its good education system, and I think the types of graduates that have created companies like Infosys....and clearly ability to provide service to the rest of the world...that comes from a solid education system", she said.

"But at the same time, India is growing very fast and you know it needs more and more educated people and you know clearly we believe, American higher education sector could be of assistance. So whatever it is that we can provide in collaboration with Indian educators, Indian University people, we are very interested in being involved in," Ameri said.

Ameri met top executives of some of the technology companies here, including Chief Mentor of Infosys Technologies N R Narayana Murthy and encouraged its role in providing higher education opportunities.

She said she spoke to the companies on the new initiative of her Bureau on an online free English language training programme, designed to serve as a fundamental resource for worldwide outreach to young people who want to study English.

"We know that we can do this (programme) through a collaboration between my Bureau at the State Department and one or two private sector firms and we wanted to talk to him (Murthy) about that. Infosys might be one of the companies that might be involved", Ameri said.

"We are talking to a lot of private sector companies to see how they can collaborate with us on doing more than what we are doing in India now".

She said the US and India have now expanded the Fulbright relationship. "We are now equal partners in Fulbright programme. It will allow us to provide Fulbright scholarship to more young people to come to the US, study and come back", Ameri said.

"Fulbright is a prestigious scholarship. Quite a few worldleaders are recipients of the Fulbright scholarship," she added.
