JAPAN EMBASSY'S PRESS-RELEASE
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, /MONTSAME/ The Embassy of Japan to Mongolia issued a press-release March 13 briefing on incident regarding Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant unit 1.
It says," 1. Let me make a briefing on the view of the Government of Japan (GOJ) regarding the incident. At 15:36 on March 12th, 2011, the roof of the reactor building of the Fukushima Dai-ichi power plant unit 1 was blown away due to heightened pressure from inside. It is envisaged that the containment vessel has not been seriously damaged by this incident.
2. It seems that the loss of the roof of the reactor building caused by the mixing of oxygen in the air and the hygrogen accumulated in the celling of the reactor building from the containment vessel, with a sunsequent exploision.
3. The radiation monitor data taken at the Fukushima Dai-ichi power plant endorses the above-mentioned view. At 15:29 before the exploision, the reading was 1015 micro sievert per hour, while at 18:55 after the exploision, the reading dropped down to 70.5 micro sievert per hour. It seems that the earlier reading of 10.15 sievert per hour is attributed to the intentional venting of the air with tiny amount of radiation from the containment vessel, which was conducted for the purpose lowering the pressure inside containment vessel.
4. In order to secure the safety of the Fukushima Dai-ichi power plant unit 1, at 20:20, the GOJ began measures to lower the temperature of fuel in the reactor pressure vessel by injecting sea water, and to restrain futher nuclear fissions of fuel by mixing some boron into sea water.
5. Thus, the incident is fundamentally different from the Chernobyl incident which was caused by core meltdown. The GOJ is of the view to continue taking thoroughgoing measures to secure the safety of nuclear power stations, which experienced the earthquake."
