Impacts on Thai automotive industry

BANGKOK, March 14 (TNA) - Automotive authorities believe the impacts of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, are limited on the Thai automotive industry, but there may be some problems related to car parts.

Wallop Tiasiri, director of the Thailand Automotive Institute, confirmed the disaster would not affect the prices of spare parts, and there would not be a shortage because affected areas in Japan were not major vehicle production bases.

Wallop noted however, there may be some impact on the automobile assembly plants stocking parts for 15-day use. The management of the plants were to review their situation and find second sources of supplies.

Ninnart Chaithirapinyo, vice president of Toyota Motor Thailand, said its senior executives in Thailand were reviewing the situation. Initially the management will suspend employee overtime. The situation will affect the production of passenger cars that depends highly on parts from Japan. The production of pick-up trucks can proceed, as this depends only slightly on parts from Japan.
