FTI foresees impacts from Japan's quake, tsunami
BANGKOK, March 14 (TNA) - The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) has foreseen both negative and positive impacts on Thai businesses, from the powerful earthquake and tsunami, which hit Japan's northeastern region on Friday.
FTI Chairman Payungsak Chartsuthiphol said several sectors in Thailand, particularly agri-business, have been negatively affected by the powerful 9.0-magnitude quake and tsunami, as the region is a hub of Japan’s food and other agri-business plants.
Payungsak acknowledged Thai subsidiaries of Japanese firms and some small-scale Thai suppliers, have also been affected by the worst natural disaster in Japan in over 60 years.
The FTI chief said the affected businesses in Thailand, most FTI members, are assessing impacts from the disaster.
The FTI chair noted, however, impacts from radiation leaks from a nuclear plant in Japan's quake-hit agri-business region are expected to exert pressure on Thai food businesses, in terms of increased demands, as world consumers would be worried over radiation-contaminated food products from Japan.
