PDIP FIRES LEGISLATOR AGUS CONDRO OVER BI BRIBERY CASE
Semarang, C Java, Aug 23 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Democracy Party-Struggle (PDIP) has scrapped legislator Agus Condro from its membership list because it considers him guilty of receiving a bribe for the election of a ranking Bank Indonesia (BI) or central bank executive, a senior party official said.
"We will not renominate him for election to the House of Representatives (DPR) in 2009 and have also deleted his name from the party membership list," PDIP Secretary General Pramono Anung said here Saturday.
He said the PDIP leadership had concluded Agus Condro had made a mistake and deviated from the party's political line.
"Actually, the PDIP had all along favored the election of Miranda Goeltom as BI senior deputy governor so that anybody who capitalized on this party stance is guilty. With or without any monetary reward, the party was supporting Miranda," he said.
Anung also said Condro's allegation that a few other members of the PDIP faction in the House had also taken bribes in the same case was not true. "The other persons he has named prove not to have received any of the same funds," he said.
The PDIP respected the ongoing legal processes to settle the case involving Condro and would not hesitate to act against any other party members who prove to have made the same mistake as Agus Condro, especially in accepting illegal funds, Anung said.
Condro had recently publicly admitted to having received Rp500 million in traveller's checks together with four other legislators two weeks after the House commission to which they belonged voted in favor of Miranda Goeltom in a process to select the most suitable person for the post of BI senior deputy governor from among three candidates in 2004.
