Duma hearings to focus on RF-Norway maritime delimitation treaty
MOSCOW, March 14 (Itar-Tass) - Parliamentary hearings on a
Russian-Norwegian treaty on maritime delimitation and cooperation in the Barents Sea and the Arctic Ocean will take place at Russia's State Duma on Monday.
Taking part in the event will be representatives of Russia's Foreign Ministry, Defence Ministry and other relevant agencies.
The hearings will be held within the framework of the preparation of the treaty for ratification "taking into account the public reaction caused by the Russian-Norwegian treaty in our country," said Konstantin Kosachev, the head of the State Duma international affairs committee.
The event will bring together "both supporters and radical opponents of the treaty's ratification," he said.
"All points of view will be heard as a minimum and taken into account as a maximum as further efforts are taken to prepare the draft law for ratification," he said reiterating that the lower house of parliament plans to consider it on March 25.
The document that was signed by the two countries' presidents Dmitry Medvedev and Jens Stoltenberg in Murmansk creates favourable legal conditions for exploration and development of the Arctic continental shelf and opportunities for cooperation in hydrocarbons development in a formerly disputed area. Such an approach will help to lift possible contradictions over distribution of hydrocarbon resources effectively and in advance.
