Japan's post-quake events prove need for n-power development - view
MOSCOW, March 14 (Itar-Tass) - Post-quake events at Japan's nuclear
power plants will not stop the world's nuclear power development, the
deputy director general of Russia's nuclear power corporation Rosatom,
Alexander Lokshin, said.
"These events will make nuclear power experts once again to prove
inevitability" of existence of civilian nuclear power, he said.
He noted that at present, nuclear power researchers are working on the creation of new generation reactors that will be able to work safely in emergency mode not 24 hours as they do now, but 72 hours.
However, even under the current conditions "Japan's specialists
managed to do much to prevent the post-quake effects during 24 hours they had."
Lokshin recalled that Russia's specialists are building reactors at
India's Kudankulam nuclear power plant.
"The plant is also located in the tsunami prone area," he said adding that last time when tsunami struck this region the reactors were not affected and residents of the region even hid from tsunami on the nuclear power plant's territory.
