Reward offered in NSW murder cold case
SYDNEY, March 12 (AAP)- A $200,000 reward has been offered for information over the murder of Nigel McAree 35 years ago.
Mr McAree's body was found decapitated with a single gunshot wound to the back of his head, at the Governor Game Lookout in the Royal National Park, on September 17, 1975.
A $10,000 NSW Government reward was offered for one year in 1975, and again in 1978, but no one came forward with information.
"I hope that the $200,000 reward being offered today by the NSW government will encourage those who have new information as well as those who may have given anonymous information previously, to get back in contact with police," NSW police minister Michael Daley said.
"It has been 35 years since Mr McAree's body was found, but officers from the Unsolved Homicide Squad remain confident that with the assistance of the public, this case can be solved."
"It may not seem like much but if anybody has any piece of information, however small, it could prove to be the vital link that police need to find out what happened."
An anonymous member of the community gave information to Victorian Crime Stoppers back in 2005 and police urge this person to make contact with the current NSW investigators via Crime Stoppers.
"This was a particularly brutal, vicious crime and we will do everything within our power to bring the person or persons responsible, to justice," Detective Inspector John Lehmann of the State Crime Commands Unsolved Homicide Team said.
"Regardless of the age of cases such as this, we never give up on them until they are solved."
Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
