Radiation level at Japan's quake-hit NPP 1,000 times above normal

TOKYO, March 12 (Itar-Tass) -- A radiation leak may have occurred from
the earthquake-hit Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan, the Tokyo
Electric Power Company said. According to the Agency for Nuclear and
Industrial Safety the radiation level at one of the nuclear plant's
reactors is a thousand times above normal.
Prime Minister Naoto Kan, who flew to the earthquake-affected areas on Saturday, has announced the evacuation of residents whose homes are
located within a radius of 10 kilometers around the nuclear power plant in view of the threat of radiation contamination.
On Friday, the authorities declared the evacuation of the population
from the three-kilometer zone around Fukushima.
