ANWAR GOES AGAINST SPIRIT OF NATIONHOOD, SAYS FORMER PKR MEMBER
BUKIT MERTAJAM (Malaysia), Aug 22 (Bernama) -- People's Justice Party (Parti Keadilan Rakyat) (PKR) advisor Anwar Ibrahim has been accused by his former close confidant of engaging in racial politics which goes against the spirit of nationhood championed by past statesmen.
The former head of PKR Youth movement, Ezam Mohd Noor said it was not easy for the champions of racial unity such as Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra AlHaj, Tan Cheng Lock and V.T.Sambanthan to create a multi-racial country and now,Anwar's struggle had gone against the principles established.
Since the last general election, the PKR leader had played up racial sentiments to attract as much support from the Chinese and Indian communities by ridiculing government policies which favoured the Malays such as the New economic Policy (NEP) and National Education Policy, he told reporters afterspeaking to residents at Jalan Semilang, Seberang Jaya, here.
Seberang Perai (also known in English as Province Wellesley) is a narrow hinterland opposite Penang island on the Malay Peninsula, which together withthe island forms the Malaysian state of Penang.
He said there was no excuse for his actions as such politics was dangerous in a multi-racial country like Malaysia which must look after the sensitivity ofeach race.
In the by-election for the Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat on Aug 26, Anwar faces Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Arif Shah Omar Shah and HanafiMamat from Angkatan Keadilan Insan Malaysia (AKIM).
The by-election is being held following the resignation of Permatang Pauh incumbent Member of Parliament Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail on July 31 tomake way for her husband, Anwar to contest the seat.
