Chiang Mai Haze approaches unsafe levels

BANGKOK, March 11 (TNA) - Chiang Mai Governor Mom Luang Panutda Ditssakul has urged relevant agencies to step up efforts to control local haze after the atmosphere's particulate matter (PM) was measured at 109.9 microgrammes earlier this week, nearly exceeding the recognised safe level.
Mom Luang Panutda said that the relevant agencies should work strictly in line with a provincial strategy to control fires on farmlands and wildfires, while promoting public cooperation and supporting the use of green technology in burning activities.
Chiang Mai's authorities are, therefore, trying to bring the situation under control before the upcoming Songkran Festival over the next couple of weeks.
A Chiang Mai University researcher Suthinee Dontree said that five of Chiang Mai’s districts, including Hot, Mae Chaem, Omkoi, Doi Tao, and Chiang Dao, have suffered from the haze-related problems for years, as local villagers have continued to clear their plots of land for livestock grazing by making fires.
