Brumbies thumped by rampant Crusaders
SYDNEY, March 11 (AAP)- Winger Sean Maitland and five-eighth Daniel Carter dominated as the Crusaders thrashed the Friend-less Brumbies 52-10 in Nelson on Friday.
Maitland scored a competition record-equalling four tries and Carter landed his first eight shots for goal as he accrued 20 points.
The Brumbies, who slipped to a third straight loss and their second under new coach Tony Rea, were competitive until halftime.
They trailed just 16-10 before Carter kicked a penalty right on halftime, before conceded 36 successive points.
The third quarter was a miserable one for the visitors, as they conceded four tries and 26 unanswered points.
Discipline was again an issue for the Brumbies, who scored more tries than the opposition in their two previous defeat.
Carter kicked four first half penalties and Brumbies skipper and five-eighth Matt Giteau was sin-binned by referee in the 22nd minute for a "deliberate and cynical" offence at the breakdown.
The Brumbies were outscored 10-3 while their skipper was off, with replacement goalkicker Josh Valentine missing a shot from almost in front.
Sloppy play from Valentine also culminated in Maitland scoring his first try which set up a 16-10 lead.
The Brumbies, who parted company with coach Andy Friend after the round two loss to Melbourne, didn't score a point in the final 59 minutes, but there was little sign in the first quarter of the carnage to come.
Giteau scored all the Brumbies points, converting his own third minute try and kicking a penalty.
He pounced on the loose ball to sprint 20 metres and convert for a 7-0 lead.
Maitland scored his second try 47 seconds into the second half to trigger the landslide.
Former league international Sonny Bill Williams stepped around Wallaby Adam Ashley-Cooper and Maitland completed his hat-trick as the Crusaders poured on 21 points inside the first ten minutes off the half.
Maitland crossed a fourth time and fullback Israel Dagg notched a sixth try for the home team just before the end.
The Crusaders centre pairing of Williams and Robbie Fruean were again impressive, with the latter scything down Ashley-Cooper just short of the home team's line following a 60 metre chase.
The Brumbies scrum performed well in the first half, while young openside flanker Colby Faingaa did well.
