Nearly 9,000 Thai workers from Libya return home

BANGKOK, March 11 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Labour's Department of Employment reported on Friday that nearly 9,000 Thai workers from Libya have returned home safely and the rest will arrive in Thailand within March 15.

Sumet Mahosot, the department's deputy director-general, said that Thai nationals from Libya have continued arriving home, with four more flights carrying some 566 Thai workers back home earlier in the day, making the number of Thai workers returning to Thailand from Libya to have reached 8,939 since February 24. Sumet confirmed that the rest Thai workers from Libya, whose number is about 2,500, will return to Thailand within March 15.

Sumet revealed that his department has already prepared over 12,000 overseas jobs for the Thai returnees from riot-torn Libya, 7,300 of them are available in South Korea and over 5,000 are available in Taiwan, Qatar and other Arab countries.

Salaries and wages in South Korea are close to those in Libya. The minimum salary in South Korea now stands around 26,000 baht, excluding overtimes. Interested Thai workers can undergo Korean-language tests in Bangkok and three other Thai provinces, namely Nakhon Ratchasima, Udon Thani and Lampang, with the next examination scheduled from March 28-April 1, 2011.

According to the senior Thai labour official, groups of Thai workers can seek free Korean-language classes provided by the Department of Skill Development through his department. (TNA)
