Thailand not affected by Japan's quake, say authorities

BANGKOK, March 11 (TNA) - Thailand's Natural Disaster Warning Centre announced Friday afternoon that the Kingdom is unlikely to be affected by a strongest 8.8-magnitude earthquake and tsunami which hit Japan earlier in the day.
Somsak Kaosuwon, Director of the Natural Disaster Warning Centre, confirmed that the latest powerful quake in Japan, followed by a-10-metre-high tsunami, would not have any impact on Thailand, saying that his centre has been closely monitoring the situation since it started hitting Japan around noon; so, local people should not panic.
Meanwhile, Thani Thongphakdi, Director-General of the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Department of Information, reported that there are some 50,000 Thai nationals in Japan about 300 of them are living in coastal areas of Miyagi on the main Honshu Island near the quake site.
Thani, who is also the Thai Foreign Ministry Spokesman, said that the Thai Embassy in Tokyo has been coordinating with the Thai community Miyagi to see whether they have been affected by the massive tremor so that immediate assistance will be dispatched to them. (TNA)
