Young Guards to hoist Russian flag on Kunashir
YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, March 11 (Itar-Tass) -- Activists of the Young
Guards movement will hoist a giant Russian flag on Kunashir Island next
week to make Japan see that the South Kurils it claims as northern
territories are Russian land.
Head of the Sakhalin regional branch of the movement Konstantin
Saprykin said the idea emerged after the Russian flag was burned down in
Tokyo during the of day of Northern territories.
He said on Thursday activists are expected to fly to Kunashir from
Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk on March 15.
"We shall put up the flag tower with the Russian flag and banner of
3x6 meters in size with an inscription 'Kurils are Russian territory' in
the southernmost point of Kunashir and on the top of a peak. Local
residents and journalists will join the action which aims to reiterate our
position that the Kurils are an integral territory of the Russian
Federation," he said.
