Transfer of detainees from Cambodia to Thai prison should be difficult, say Thai PM
BANGKOK, March 11 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has acknowledged that a transfer of two Thai detainees from Prey Sar Prison in Cambodia into custody in Thailand should be more difficult to achieve than the attainment of a royal pardon in Cambodia.
In response to a proposal from the yellow-clad People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) for the Thai government to request that Cambodia repatriates Mr Veera Somkwamkid and Miss Ratree Pipatanapaiboon, Abhisit noted that in reality there are many legal aspects and details to consider, and that a request for a royal pardon from the Cambodian King for Mr Veera, who is ill, and his secretary, Miss Ratree, should be the best way out.
Regarding the progress of attempted negotiations to resolve Thai-Cambodian border woes, the Thai premier said that Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya would report to him, and that he still believes both Thailand and Cambodia are able to talk and develop a mutual understanding. (TNA)
