Thailand successfully develops new type of pineapple

BANGKOK, March 11 (TNA) - Thailand has proclaimed a success in pineapple tissue culture to create a new type of pineapples which can stay fresh for about 45 days after harvest, much longer than normal pineapples which last only about one week.

The new pineapple, named “Lueang Sam Roi Yod” (Yellow Sam Roi Yod), was developed by local growers in Sam Roi Yod District of Thailand's upper southern Prachuap Khiri Khan Province with research supported by Kasetsart University in Bangkok. The newly-introduced Thai pineapple has been developed from Pattavia Pineapple over the past 10 years.

According to Thai researchers at Kasetsart University, the new pineapple can be stored for 45 days after harvest in normal temperatures, as it has a dark yellow texture, a thick skin but a thin rough layer--which are good for consuming fresh or processing into canned fruit. Normal pineapples spoil quickly within about one week after harvest, causing some problems to exports of the Thai fruit to overseas markets.

With the success, Prachuap Khiri Khan is expected to be promoted as a major pineapple growing area beneficial to its expanding exports of the tropical Thai fruit. (TNA)
