Newly upgraded MIS Centre helps in collecting data of LSM items: Bijarani

Islamabad, March 10, 2011 (PPI): Federal Minister for Industries and Production, Mir Hazar Khan Bijarani, has said that newly upgraded MIS Centre would help in collecting and compiling data of Large Scale Manufacturing (LSM) items in a short span of time.

He stated this after the inauguration of the upgraded Management Information System (MIS) Centre of the Ministry for Industries and Production here on Thursday. The very simple but an impressive ceremony was attended by Abdul Ghaffar Soomro, Secretary Industries and Production and other officers and officials of the Ministry.

On this occasion, Mrs. Shaista Sohail Joint Secretary Policy & Planning of the Ministry, briefed the Minister that the time-lag of data collection was approximately 30 to 40 days prior todate. Now the new upgraded MIS Centre would be able to collect this data in less than 10 days from the manufacturing units.

The Minister was informed that the cumulative growth rate for July 2010 to January 2011 for the 37 items is 0.84%, means, hat it has shown a positive trend turning around the negative growth shown in the earlier six months of 2010-11. The growth rate for January 2011 compared to January 2010 has increased by 1.1%.

It is also pertinent to mention here that the Ministry has been collecting Large Scale Manufacturing (LSM) Data of 37 Items’ since its inception. These 37 LSM items are: Sugar, Cigarettes, Cotton Yarn, Cotton Cloth, Jute Goods (Hessain, Sacking and Others), Paper & Board ( Printing, Writing, Packing, Paper Board and Chip Board), Soda Ash, Caustic Soda, Fertilizer(Urea, Ammonium Nitrate, Ammonium Sulphate, Nitro Phosphate, Sulphur Phosphate, Di-Ammonium Phosphate and NPK), Sheet / Float Glass, Cement, Bicycles, Steel Sector / Pakistan Steel Mills (Cock, Pig Iron / H.Metal, Cast/Rolled Billet, HR.Coils/ Plates, CR.Coils, Glav. Products, Auto Sector (Cars, Jeeps, LCV’s, Trucks, Busses, Tractors and Motor Cycles).

MIS-Centre of MoIP collects production data of aforesaid 37 LSM items and the reasons of variation in their production from Manufacturing Associations, Provincial Bureaus of Statistics and direct from units on monthly basis. After the data collection, it is computerized and tabulated in different formats as desired by the users showing trends in production.

Then this data is forwarded to the Federal Bureau of Statistics for compiling the Quantum Index of Manufacturing (QIM) for 100 items. QIM is the indicator of real growth rate of value added of Large Scale Manufacturing Industries. Census of Manufacturing Industries (CMI) is conducted under the Industrial Statistics Act 1942 in collaboration with Provincial Directorates of Industries & Provincial Bureaus of Statistics. The CMI inter alia provides weights for the QIM.


These production reports are forwarded to Finance Division, Planning Division, State Bank of Pakistan & Federal Bureau of Statistics and to others as and when requested on the prescribed format. The production data is also circulated in this Ministry to different wings for using it in their briefs / reports’ preparation.
