Mush gets a pat from Bush for 'democratic transition' in Pak

ally, US President George W Bush has thanked Pakistan's former President Pervez Musharraf for his "efforts in the democratictransition" of the country and his role in the war on terror.

Bush called up the ex-military ruler Thursday. He also talked to Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani over phone and assured him of the US administration's continued support for the democratic government in Pakistan in the wake ofMusharraf's resignation.

"President Bush spoke this morning to Musharraf...and thanked him for his efforts in the democratic transition of Pakistan, as well as the fight against al-Qaeda and extremist groups," National Security Council Gordon Johndroe toldreporters in Crawford, Texas.

Musharraf resigned on Monday to avoid impeachment by the Pakistan People's Party-led ruling coalition. An election tochoose his successor will be held on September 6.

Following his resignation, US officials have indicated that Musharraf would be welcome to shift to America if he sowishes.

Earlier this week too, Bush appreciated Musharraf for his "commitment" to fight terrorism while Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice offered "deep gratitude" for his decision tojoin the US-led war against extremists.

"Musharraf made the critical choice to join the fight against al-Qaeda, the Taliban and other extremist groups that threaten the peace and security of Pakistan, its neighbours and partners throughout the world. For this, he has our deepgratitude," Rice had said.
