Nine more districts declared drought-stricken, says authority

CHIANG MAI, March 10 (TNA) - Disaster officials have reported the drought in Chiang Mai Province has become more severe this week, despite previous hopes it would relent. The earlier expectations had been based on the observation high water levels had been sustained, compared to the same period last year.

Prajon Pratsakul, who heads the province’s disaster prevention and mitigation office, announced Wednesday morning a total of 9 districts in Chiang Mai city have been declared disaster-stricken zones namely, Hot, San Pa Tong, Om Koi, Doi Tao, Samoeng, Kalyaniwattana, Chom Thong, Doi Lo and San Sai.

The emergency declared will cover a minimum of 228 villages, extending to at least 24,700 households and some 89,600 people.

Meanwhile, Prajon said authorities will continue to monitor the remaining 16 districts in the province, particularly non-irrigated areas currently facing severe drought conditions, and may consider making similar declarations in other areas if it can help to facilitate alleviation efforts. (TNA)
