Thai consumers assured that there will be a sufficient palm oil supply

BANGKOK, March 10 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Commerce has ensured local consumers a sufficient palm oil supply, despite the National Palm Oil Committee resolution to suspend imports of the raw product, as locally-grown palms are now entering the domestic market.

Thai Commerce Minister Pornthiva Nakasai confirmed this, saying that there is already enough impurified palm oil from neighbouring Malaysia in Thailand to begin producing palm cooking oil at a rate of some 2.5 million litres a day in 10 production plants for consumers nationwide.

Pornthiva acknowledged that her ministry has sought cooperation from these palm oil plants to provide cooking oil on shelves throughout the country, and, in as many places as possible, at the official subsidised price of 47 baht per one-litre bottle. She also added that from now on, consumers would be allowed to purchase unlimited amounts.

Pornthiva said that the National Palm Oil Committee also ordered local palm oil plants to purchase a total of around 40,000 tonnes of impurified palm oil from local sources for the production of enough cooking oil to serve domestic demands in the coming months.

The Thai commerce minister also urged local consumers to report to her ministry's Department of Internal Trade at its hotline number, 1569, in case they find palm cooking oil being retailed for higher than the subsidised 47 baht per a one-litre bottle or experience a shortage of the cooking oil in a any particular area.
