USAID releases $6.66 million for repair, rehabilitation of Tarbela Power Station
Lahore, March 09, 2011 (PPI): United States Agency for International Development USAID released US$6.66 million to Water & Power Development Authority WAPDA for repair and rehabilitation of Tarbela Power Station, a WAPDA press release said Wednesday.
USAID had signed agreement with WAPDA to provide financial assistance of $16.5 million for Tarbela Power Station. It will be utilized for repair, rehabilitation of three units of power house including units 1, 3 & 4 which will add another 60MW to installed capacity, which is 3478MW at present. It also includes replacing class-B stator winding of three units with superior class-F insulation winding.
With replacement of winding, capability of unit 4 will enhance by 108MW under over-load condition. After repair, units 1 and 3 each with capacity of 175MW, will provide additional 40MW to national grid. Repair, rehabilitation work of Tarbela Power Station with USAID financing, is expected to be completed by end of year 2011.
In addition to constructing new hydropower projects, WAPDA also undertaken rehabilitation of electro-mechanical equipment of its aged power houses including Warsak, Tarbela, Mangla, Jabban, Renala etc. USAID is also providing another $66 million for completing Gomal Zam Dam in FATA & Satpara Dam in Gilgit- Baltistan.
