Thai government to carry on communal land title project

BANGKOK, March 9 (TNA) - The government will continue issuing land titles for local communities, covering some 140,000 households across the country, under an official communal land title project.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva confirmed the policy Wednesday morning, as he presided over the signing of an agreement between eight agencies tasked with jointly implementing the project based on relevant laws, saying there were some 190 communities having sought the communal land deeds.

Abhisit acknowledged the importance of the project, as it has helped solve conflicts among local villagers over farmlands, and ensured occupational security for local people, while utilising plots of land for the maximum benefit of a community.

Under the project, local villagers in any community will form in groups, to seek the government's approval of their communal land titles for collective management and efficient use of the land, and will jointly seek ways to address emerging problems. (TNA)
