Over 10,000 positions available for Thai returnees from Libya

BANGKOK, March 9 (TNA) - The Ministry of Labour is preparing assistance measures for Thai migrant workers returning from Libya, finding over 10,000 positions in Thailand and other countries.
The Ministry's spokesperson, Sutham Nateetong, said the evacuation of Thai workers has been a success, with 11,796 evacuated from Libya into safe areas since February 24.
Out of this number, 6,359 workers have arrived in Thailand and some 5,000 are staying in hotels on the Tunisia-Libya border. All the remaining Thai workers are expected to return home by March 15.
However, some 5,000 Thai workers residing in the southern part of Libya, have opted to remain in the country, believing their areas to be safe. The Thai Ministry of Labour has coordinated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to closely monitor the situation, and prepare a further evacuation plan should the violence spread to these regions.
Sutham added the Canadian-owned SNC-Lavalin Company employing more than half of all of the Thai workers in Libya, had promised to find vacant positions in Arab countries namely Algeria and UAE.
The ministry has also discussed with recruitment firms sending Thai workers to Libya, to relocate contracted employees to work in other countries without having to pay additional job placement fees.
Meanwhile, the Department of Employment’s Director-General Jirasuk Sukhontachart, said there were 7,068 positions available in Thailand and the Department had coordinated with the governments of Taiwan, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Kuwait, and managed to find 4,419 positions for returnees.
Jirasuk added the Department of Employment had cooperated with the Ministry of Finance and a number of commercial banks, to look for low-interest loan sources for Thai job-seekers, who want to travel to work aboard. (TNA)
