CURSES ON ANWAR'S LIPS IN PERMATANG PAUH BY-ELECTION CAMPAIGN

BUKIT MERTAJAM (Malaysia), Aug 22 (Bernama) -- Words like "banggang" (stupid), "bahlol" (foolish), "bodoh" (idiot), "celaka" (scoundrel) and "sial" (damned), are always heard in Anwar Ibrahim's campaign in the Permatang Pauh parliamentary by-election.

Anwar, who is known for his oratory skills, especially in his younger days as leader of the Malaysian Muslim Youth Movement (ABIM), has never used suchharsh and vulgar words in his speeches.

He is now a changed person, always resorting to name-calling to enliven hishis ceramah (political talk).

At one ceramah at Seberang Jaya recently, the People's Political Party (Parti Keadilan Rakyat) (PKR) advisor told his audience that he had to resort to using such words because "the Permatang Pauh people are a differentlot".

"They can't speak kindly and gently. They don't understandan. To make them understand, I have to speak like this," he said to his audience, who includedchildren.

However, at another ceramah a few days later, Anwar apologised to theaudience for the use of offensive words and language.

"Azizah told me not to be so harsh," he said referring to his wife, Dr WanAzizah Wan Ismail, who is PKR president.

Thursday night, at a ceramah at Seberang Jaya, Anwar's tone was moregentle, with no harsh and vulgar words uttered.

Anwar will face the National Front (Barisan Nasional) candidate Arif Shah Omar Shah and Hanafi Mamat, of Angkatan Keadilan Insan Malaysia in the contestfor the Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat.

The seat became vacant when Azizah resigned as the member of parliament tomake way for her husband to contest the seat.
