Thai authorities step up protection for PM Abhisit

BANGKOK, March 9 (TNA) - Thailand’s Center for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES) has prohibited entry into roads around the prime minister’s residence and steps up protection for the prime minister’s outdoor work.

CRES spokesman Pol Maj Gen Prawut Thawornsiri said that the center issued its fourth announcement to prohibit entry to roads around the prime minister’s residence. The ban will affect Sukhumvit Soi 39 between the intersections of Sukhumvit road and Phetchaburi road; Sukhumvit Soi 33 and Sukhumvit Soi 31 road between the intersections of Sukhumvit road and Sawasdee road, and from the backlane that links Sukhumvit Soi 39 and Promsri intersection to the intersection at Sawaddee Wittaya School.

The announcement was issued by virtue of the 2008 Internal Security Act as, during previous rallies, protesters usually set upon these roads, causing problems for local people. Furthermore, the national police chief has ordered local authorities to step up security measures for outdoor work of the prime minister to prevent complainers from approaching the prime minister. For the red shirt protest planned on March 12, 26 companies of police have been prepared to focus on the Democracy Monument, Government House, the parliament building, and areas around the protest sites of the People’s Alliance for Democracy to prevent clashes.
