Thai police seize Bt11m methamphetamine along Thai-Lao border

UBON RATCHATHANI, March 7 (TNA) - Local police apprehended a gang of drug traffickers in Thailand's northeastern Ubon Ratchathani Province on Monday (March 7) while they were smuggling in a huge amount of methamphetamine pills, known as “Ya ba” in Thai, and other narcotics from neighbouring Laos, totally worth some 11 million baht.

The anti-drug and provincial police, region 3, arrested red-handed Thawee Pralomnam and four other members of his drug gang at a police checkpoint in Sikiew District of Thailand's northeastern Nakhon Ratchasima Province and seized from them 72,000 methamphetamine pills, one kilogram of marihuana and 500 grammes of crystal methamphetamine or ecstasy altogether.

The Thai police said that they had set up check points to cut off two major escape routes of cross-border drug traffickers after having provided tip-offs of possible drug smuggling on a VIGO pick-up truck with red-license plate number ko 0742 Yasothon, which had led to the arrest of the five-member drug gang.

According to the Thai police, Mr. Thawee confessed when being questioned that he was paid 10,000 baht to smuggle the drugs from Laos’s Kasemrad Province to be delivered to drug dealers in Bangkok. He and his gang's members were then charged with possessing of narcotics without an official permission. (TNA)
