Batch of crabs smuggled out of Russia arrested in US

PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY (Itar-Tass) - Russian and U.S. coast
guards in a join raid in Seattle have arrested a large batch of crab
smuggled out of Russia, the press service of the North-Eastern coast guard
department of the Federal Security Service told Itar-Tass on Monday.
Smugglers tried to sell crab meat estimated at 2.7 million U.S.
dollars at the end of February amid a decline in official crab exports and
a rise in prices for this gourmet item on the U.S. market.
Russia's Kondor Transport company registered in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk that
is involved in the wholesale fish distribution is suspected of smuggling.
The investigation found out that in 2010 the company exceeded the
quotas on crab fishing eight times. Around 112 tonnes of contraband crab
were exported to the United States.
The investigation is underway.
