PRESIDENT ADMITS DISPARITY STILL OCCURS IN REGIONAL DEVELOPMENTS

Jakart, Aug 22 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said the acceleration of developments in some of underdeveloped areas in Indonesia was needed as disparity still occurred in regional developments in the country.

"The government has been aware of the disparity since the beginning as there are still several underdeveloped areas in our country," the president said when delivering a speech concerning policies on regional development at the Regional Representative Council (DPD)'s plenary session here Friday.

According to him, such a condition has resulted in the low productivity and the high rate of poverty in those underdeveloped areas.

"Thus, developments in the underdeveloped areas are accelerated in an effort to reduce poverty," he said.

In the National mid-term Development Planning and the National Strategy on the Acceleration of Developments in Underdeveloped Areas, it was pronounced that 199 districts were categorized as underdeveloped areas.

The pronouncement was made based on the local economic condition, human resources, infrastructure, financial condition and accessibility as well as characteristics.

The 199 underdeveloped areas consist of 179 districts in non-border areas and 20 in border areas, 62 percent of them located in Indonesia's eastern region, 29 percent in Sumatra island and 9 percent in Java and Bali.

Meanwhile, 28 formerly underdeveloped areas have now been free from such a status and 30 underdeveloped districts have been improving and were expected to be free from the status of underdeveloped areas in 2009.
