Thailand's ID smart cards likely to be available by May 2011

BANGKOK, March 5 (TNA) - Thai Interior Minister Chavarat Charnvirakul says that Thailand's newly-developed digital identity (ID) cards, widely known as "smart cards", are expected to be fully available by May 2011.
Chavarat acknowledged that his ministry has made all necessary preparations, including equipment and personnel, and can issue the electronic IDs to the Thai public once some 300,000 “smart-cards” are delivered by the Thai Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
Chavarat said his ministry plans to first issue a portion of the "smart cards", to the public, embeded with key personal information of each holder, by March 11, especially for those in remote areas in the country, and the remaining is expected to be fully available by May this year. (TNA)
