More Thai workers arrive home from Libya

BANGKOK, March 5 (TNA) - A new group of 313 Thai workers arrived in Thailand from Libya early Saturday morning (March 5), becoming the first group of Thai nationals who returned home via a charted flight arranged by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The 313 Thai nationals were accompanied home by Chavanond Intarakomalayasut, Secretary to the Thai Foreign Minister, who told journalists upon arriving at Thailand's main Suvarnabhumi International Airport that the new batch of Thai workers were first evacuated from Libya's Tripoli and Benghazi Cities to Tunisia before boarding the chartered plane back to Thailand.

Chavanond said that under the official evacuation plan arranged by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs, three chartered flights of Thai Airways International (THAI), the national flag carrier, are to fly about 700 Thai workers from Libya to Thailand daily, and that his ministry's evacuation plan for Thai nationals in riot-torn Libya could be completed by March 13.

Chavanond acknowledged, however, that some 8,000 Thai workers have remained in several towns in Libya--in which not much violence has been reported and their returning home will depend on their private employment agents, with their coordination with the Thai Ministry of Labour.

According to updated figures, nearly 4,000 Thai nationals, mostly workers, have been evacuated from violence-stricken Libya since last month. (TNA)
