Thai King endorses constitutional amendments

BANGKOK, March 5 (TNA) - His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej has endorsed Thailand's two constitutional amendment bills in a royal command, paving the way for a new general election in the Kingdom later this year.

A joint sitting of Thailand's Lower and Upper Houses recently passed two key amended sections of the country's 2007 Constitution, regarding a change in Thailand's electoral system and an increase in the number of members of Parliament or MPs. The amended parts of the Thai Charter took effect after they were published in the Royal Gazette on Friday (March 4).

Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has announced that he will step down before his term ends in late 2011 so that an early general election will be held--following the promulgation of the Charter amendment bills, as the Thai economy has been recovering and the domestic political situation has become more stable.
