Thailand, IOM join forces to evacuate workers from Libya

BANGKOK, March 4 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs has joined forces with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to evacuate Thai workers and other foreigners from unrest-stricken Libya.
Representatives of the IOM met officials of agencies under the Thai Foreign Ministry in Bangkok on Friday (March 4), including those from the permanent secretary’s office, the Department of International Organizations, the Department of South Asian, Middle East and African Affairs and the Department of Consular Affairs, to discuss the cooperation--in the wake of an agreement recently concluded between Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya and the IOM director-general in Geneva, Switzerland.
After the meeting, Thai Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs Tirakul Niyom handed out medical supplies and blankets sponsored by the Thai Red Cross Society and the Thai Ministry of Interior to the IOM, on behalf of the Thai government, so that the items would be forwarded to the international evacuees from Libya. The IOM has set up its coordination centers in Libya's Benghazi City and areas along Libya’s borders with Tunisia, Egypt and Nigeria.
Tirakul denied media reports that Libya has closed its border, saying that the Thai Embassy in the North African country has confirmed the Libyan government has no plan to close the country's border, and that a ship chartered by the Thai government to evacuate Thai workers is heading for Libya in its second trip to pick up more Thai nationals.
Meanwhile, officials of the Thai Embassy in Tripoli have called on remaining Thai people stranded in Libya to gather at the embassy so that Thai authorities can arrange their return trips to Thailand. (TNA)
