Censure debate against Thai government adjourned

BANGKOK, March 4 (TNA) - Thailand's House of Representatives announced on Friday (March 4) a postponement of a censure debate against the Thai government of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, earlier set from March 9-12, with a new schedule having been available yet.

Pithoon Pumhiran, Secretary General of the Thai House of Representatives announced the postponement, reasoning that a no-confidence motion against the Thai Democrat Party-led government--lodged by the main opposition Puea Thai Party--could not be put on agenda by Friday, in time for next week's debate.

Pithoon acknowledged that Thai House Speaker Chai Chidchob, who is also Thai Parliament President, had sent the motion back to him to verify some Cabinet members' names targeted by the opposition for the no-confidence debate.

The opposition has totally targeted 10 Cabinet members, including Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, for the no confidence debate, accusing them of abusing power with unnecessary enforcement of special security law to restrict people's freedom and rights and corruption. The opposition Peua Thai Party has also sought impeachment of nine Cabinet members, including the Thai Democrat premier, for their alleged failure in performing their duties and corruption.

Thailand's yellow-shirt People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) said that the group also plans to collect at least 20,000 public signatures in an effort to impeach Premier Abhisit for alleged neglect of duty leading the Kingdom to lose territory to neighbouring Cambodia.

Meanwhile, a Thai House session passed Friday morning the final reading of the Thai government's mid-year 100-billion-baht budget for the present 2011 fiscal year with 252:88 votes, four abstentions. (TNA)
